Mission Statement
It is the goal of the Lincoln-West Art Department to provide students with learning experiences that focus on three major areas of study. The role of the arts in people's lives develops a lifelong appreciation of the historical and cultural context of the arts. Communicating through the arts develops students' ability to express themselves in a variety of materials and techniques. Finally, responding to the arts focuses on the development of skills necessary to describe, analyze, interpret and judge works of art.
Why is this important? Because the visual arts function today in much the same way as they did since the earliest history of mankind. They satisfy personal and group needs, our physical needs for useful objects and shelter, and our needs for display and celebration.
Two of the strongest needs satisfied by the visual arts are the need to express our innermost feelings and to communicate ideas. This requires an environment that is supportive and accepting of human diversity. For this reason it is also part of our mission to create an environment that is safe, accepting, and respectful of all students; an environment free of discrimination, hate, and violence based on gender, sexual orientation, age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, or disability.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt-
