Mural Sequence Page

The first spirit mural was painted in the early 1970s. Information about its history is currently lost somewhere in the large empty hall it adorned. I began work on the new mural at the end of the school year in 1996. Students from my General Art class assisted me in painting out the old mural and tracing the large cartoons I made onto the wall. I completed the painting over the summer. In the summer of 1997 I extended the job to include the Alma Mater mural. The musical notes in the composition are the actual first two measures of the school song. The engraved plaque contains the words of the Lincoln-West Alma Mater and was designed to include elements of the mural itself. The entire composition is about 30 feet long and 8 feet high. It was painted with acrylic paints. I literally had to paint the mural twice because two coats of paint were necessary to cover the wall and make the colors look rich. To complete the process three coats of clear polyurethane was applied as a protective finish. Below is a picture of the old mural and a few photos of the new murals in the process of being completed.
